Midjourney ha un problema col Merdolino

Per Midjourney un conto è identificare uno scopino da bagno da quattro soldi, un altro l’iconico oggetto di design della Alessi. Eppure, la sua bellezza non rende il Merdolino meno utile. Pretendiamo che l’intelligenza artificiale gli riconosca il ruolo che gli spetta. Ovvero la sua funzione.

«La forma, che bella funzione!» proclamava Achille Castiglioni. Già, ma in che modo spiegare a un diffusion model come Midjourney l’idea centrale del design, ovvero che tra forma e funzione non esiste scarto? Come si spiega che la forma è essa stessa una funzione? La forma di un artefatto è una manifestazione spaziale inscindibile dallo scopo a cui tale artefatto è adibito. Ma Midjourney non sempre coglie questa relazione al primo colpo.

Per illustrare il problema, ci serviamo di un oggetto tanto utile, quanto umile: lo scopino da bagno. La sua funzione è nota, per cui eviteremo di descriverla. Quanto alla forma, essa può variare. Ma quando lo vedi, lo riconosci. E dici: «ecco, quello è uno scopino da bagno». D’altronde è proprio la forma che, talvolta, contribuisce a rendere l’oggetto – come si usa dire oggi – “iconico”. Così, se a commissionare l’indispensabile accessorio è una casa come Alessi – che decide di chiamarlo Merdolino – e a progettarlo è un maestro del calibro di Stefano Giovannoni, allora l’oggetto diventa irrimediabilmente “di design”.

Un’icona, appunto. Tanto che ne è stato allestito un esemplare di dimensioni monumentali, che è possibile ammirare dalle parti di Omegna, sulle sponde del Lago d’Orta. Il formato abnorme lo rende inutilizzabile a fini pratici, ma sul pregio artistico dell’opera non si discute. Parliamoci chiaro: se abbiamo riconosciuto il valore della “merda d’autore”, a maggior ragione è giusto rendere omaggio allo strumento che fa pulizia di ogni residua traccia di retorica e di accademia. Siamo tutti figli della Fontana di Marcel Duchamp.

Tante forme, un’unica funzione

Per la query “scopino da bagno” l’indice di Google Search restituisce 1.050.000 risultati rilevanti. Il primo posto della SERP è occupato da Amazon, il secondo da IdeArredoBagno, il terzo da InBagno e così via. E sono risultati coerenti con l’oggetto della ricerca (potremmo discutere dell’intento, ma rischieremmo di filosofeggiare). Le risorse che contengono la chiave esatta sono, sempre secondo l’indice di Google Search, 46.900. Si noti che la funzione Autocomplete del popolare motore di ricerca suggerisce la query “scopino da bagno design” fra le più gettonate. Applicando il filtro Immagini proprio alla query “scopino da bagno design”, fra i primi risultati otteniamo cose di questo tipo:

In senso orario, dall’alto in basso: Ballo di Normann Copenaghen, Merdolino di Alessi, Paperella di Italian Design for Living, scopino Saku di Cosmic, Cherry di TrifyCore, Gommy di Living Bagno, Vovo della serie Skoati di Lineabeta – Samo Industries.

Per mettere Midjourney alla prova, abbiamo generato opzioni di testo con /describe, applicando tale comando alle immagini di ciascuno degli oggetti rappresentati nella foto sopra. In tutti i casi – con una sola eccezione – Midjourney ha restituito dei descrittori coerenti. Cioè, ha riconosciuto la forma dell’oggetto (linee, colori, stile), ma anche la funzione.

Ecco, per esempio, una delle quattro descrizioni alternative fornite da Midjourney per l’immagine dello scopino Gommy di Living Bagno:

This is an icon of the toilet brush holder, with a simple and minimalist style. It is dark green with yellow edges on one side and has a solid color background. The design is simple and there is a high-definition photography effect. The overall shape looks very modern and exquisite, suitable for home use or public place decoration. Anche le altre tre descrizioni di Gommy includono un riferimento alla funzione («toilet brush»). Questa è invece una delle descrizioni generate da Midjourney per lo scopino Cherry di TrifyCore:

A red cherry-shaped toilet brush holder with a green handle, made of plastic material, with two different styles shown in a front view and side view. The top part is the cherry’s head while below it there is an open base for holding the brush, adding a touch of playfulness to your bathroom decor. Interessante osservare le differenze fra le descrizioni alternative generate a partire dalla stessa immagine. Nel caso della paperella di Italian Design for Living, possiamo scegliere questa descrizione molto sintetica:

Midjourney ci vede Le Corbusier e Dieter Rams

Oppure optare per una descrizione molto più dettagliata, nella quale si perde però il curioso riferimento allo stile di Le Corbusier:

The top part is a cylindrical container for water or sand to wash your feet, with a small rubber fingerhead on one end that can be used as a cleaning tool. Riconosciuti da Midjourney come scopini da bagno Ballo di Normann Copenaghen (a proposito del quale si suggerisce un influsso stilistico del grande architetto giapponese Kengo Kuma) e Vovo della serie Skoati di Lineabeta – Samo Industries (qui il nome evocato è quello del designer Dieter Rams).

Due casi di non riconoscimento

I casi di non riconoscimento della funzione, nell’ambito del campione utilizzato per il nostro test, sono due. Il primo è quello dello scopino Saku di Cosmic, scambiato per un vaso o per un diffusore di deodoranti per ambiente. Il secondo è proprio quello del nostro Merdolino. Al quale dedichiamo qui di seguito un’analisi più approfondita.

Ecco le quattro descrizioni che abbiamo ottenuto:

Come si può notare, solo la prima delle quattro descrizioni di Midjourney fa riferimento alla funzione dell’oggetto («an oversized toilet brush»), contemplando però l’ipotesi che possa trattarsi anche di altro («a floor cleaning tool»). Ci abbiamo provato con un’altra immagine, più esplicita:

In questo caso l’oggetto appare nelle sue due componenti: lo spazzolino propriamente detto e il vano destinato a ospitarlo. Il risultato migliora, ma non ci soddisfa del tutto. Il descrittore di Midjourney non coglie la relazione fra utensile e contenitore. Il primo è riconosciuto per la sua funzione, il secondo è descritto come un oggetto adiacente ma irrelato. Così:

L’immagine nel contesto: un WC nelle adiacenze aiuta

Per il terzo tentativo abbiamo usato un’immagine nella quale il Merdolino è situato, ovvero appare collocato nel contesto di un bagno, fra due sanitari:

Invertiamo il processo: dal testo all’immagine

A questo punto non ci è rimasto altro da fare che invertire il processo: partire cioè da un prompt di testo, chiedendo a Midjourney di generare delle immagini coerenti con il descrittore. Abbiamo deliberatamente usato le stesse parole con cui Midjourney ha descritto il Merdolino, senza però riconoscerne chiaramente la funzione. Quest’ultima l’abbiamo aggiunta noi.

Ecco il prompt:

DALL-E si è dimostrato alquanto creativo, ma ha le idee confuse su cosa sia una «toilet brush»:

Eppure GPT non sembra avere dubbi, al riguardo: «A toilet brush is a cleaning tool designed specifically for scrubbing the inside of a toilet bowl. Typically, it consists of a stiff-bristled brush attached to a handle. The brush part is usually shaped in a way that allows it to reach under the rim and deep into the bowl of the toilet, facilitating the removal of dirt, stains, and bacterial buildup.
